Hinterland Crosscountry "a big hit!"

Despite the freezing winds, on Sunday morning, 242 runners from around the region, old and young  alike, took part in the first major sporting event on the Maleny Community Precinct.

Cheered on by their families, clubs and friends, runners participated in the Winter Series Ė various cross country races from 12 km for more seasoned runners, to under 8ís, tackling the 500m course.

Declaring the course to be one of the best kept secrets on the Coast, runners commented on its suitability for such events, and the superb views came as a bonus to many first time visitors.

Maleny 5 year old Ollie Watkins ran, and surely was proud of mum Claire, who won the womenís 3 km run. Young Maleny runners Tyron and Ryan Engles, Tamika and Rascal Hopper all showed their grit in extremely windy conditions.

Neil Labinsky, winner of Pomona King of the Mountain 6 yrs in a row, took out the 12 km run, again throwing down the challenge for the next series.

In true collaborative Maleny style, locals, clubs, businesses and the Sunshine Coast Council combined to ensure a fantastic and successful event that has the Sunshine Coast Cross Country Club already talking about the next one.

Maleny Golf Club provided their magnificent area and assistance for the runs, Maleny Rotary did a superb job on the parking, Maleny Lions cooked up a storm on the sausage sizzle, Maleny Little Athletics partnered the Sunshine Coast Cross Country Club with the provision of course marshalls and recorders and the Friends of Pattemore House assisted with the parking areas.

Kelly Taylorís Coffee Stop was very popular, with piping hot drinks the order of the day.

Hosted by MDSRC, who also organised the day, the event opened up the Precinct to 100ís of first time visitors.

MDSRC sincerely thanks all volunteers, Colin James Fine Foods, Maleny Mitre 10 and Pomodoras Restaurant for providing great prizes for the winners, and is planning similar family friendly sporting events in the future.
