Club  History :

"In 1988, an advert, written by the late Alice Crombie, appeared in the Range News, with a request for a level piece of land on which a group of enthusiastic people could play croquet.    By 1990 this group was playing regularly at the residence of the late Ted Oliver at Mountain View Road.

As more people became involved, the search for a permanent home intensified and the present site was negotiated with the Showground Management Committee.    After much preparation and the fencing of the area, the first lawn was laid on December 19, 1992, with many seconded to assist.    While this lawn was being nurtured a group of the locals travelled to Caloundra regularly on a Sunday.

Early in 1993 the lawn was ready for play.    For the first few years it was divided into two half lawns so that more players could be accommodated.    It is interesting to note that in some interstate clubs the newer players use only half lawns for the first couple of years even in tournaments.

Initially we received valuable support from many sources including the other Regional clubs.    Without this assistance we would have found it extremely difficult to survive.

The club was officially opened by the then CAQ President, Mrs. Edna McKenna, on July 23rd, 1993.

In 1996 the decision was made to add a second lawn, as our numbers were slowly increasing and with two lawns we were in a better position to host other clubs and more importantly, events such as pennants.    At one stage in the late 90's wet weather made some Caloundra lawns unplayable during their annual tournament.   An early morning call and we were able to step in and some of the Caloundra Classic was transferred to Maleny for the next two days.

In September 2005, the Australian National Titles were successfully held on the Sunshine Coast.    Quite a number of matches were played at The Range.    We had been through a dry time at that stage and our interstate and overseas visitors were very favourable with their comments.

During our short history we have been very successful in the Region's Pennant Competition, winning the shield several times.

Our tenth anniversary was celebrated in July 2003, with approximately ninety guests in attendance. Visitors from all the Sunshine Coasts' clubs, as well as some players from Brisbane and Maryborough, joined us.    We also enjoyed the company of two from Tasmania, two from Victoria and two from New Zealand.    Our fame had certainly spread!

The Range Croquet Club continues to grow, even though slowly.    Representatives from our club have made their presence felt at tournaments from North Queensland to Tasmania and all points in between.

We look forward to a rosy future."
